Making your work dreams come true: Is it as easy as believing?
Plus! Group coaching is now available to book - here's what it's all about
There’s a story in the UK this week of a couple who won the lottery twice. And the quote that they gave included the line: “We knew the odds of it happening again were outrageous, but we’re proof that if you believe anything is possible.”
So here’s my thought for this week’s Career Happiness newsletter - can believing be enough to get you to a goal? If you believe something can happen, does that mean it will happen? (Spoiler alert, I don’t think so, but read on as it’s not cut and dry!).
The quote implies that the couple feel that they manifested that second win. How does that make you feel? For me, it brought up some memories of manifesting and also some thoughts about whether we can make our work dreams come true.
Is believing enough? (Especially at this time of year when everything is about magic and trust and the sparkles of prophetic stars in the sky).
The thing is, the couple’s believe came with an action. They believed - and bought a ticket. They kept the belief along with that entry to the draw.
They didn’t believe and not buy a ticket. They bought a ticket, and they believed.
And this is where, I think, the crossover comes and that you need to embrace that middle part of a Venn diagram between believing, trusting, dreaming, and action.
Manifesting has worked for me, in the past. I feel a bit cheesy saying that, but I have examples of where I feel that by making a mood board and believing, I have had things happen.
Take my book deal that I wrote about recently. Before I got my big deal, I made a mood board. It was a pin board, and I made it double-sided: One side, all about boyfriends and love, the other about agents and book deals. When I got my book deal, I remember saying to a friend, Caroline, that my mood board had only delivered on one side, and she said: “No, think about it. It’s delivered. You’ve got a book about a boyfriend.”
Well, how could I argue?
So did making that mood board take my belief to fruition? Well, not quite, if we’re honest. I also pitched to agents, pitched my column to my editor, met up with the agent who saw it, said yes to a tight deadline on a manuscript.
I spent evening after evening writing notes, turning them into a book, editing and re-editing and fitting in different research. All while believing it’d be a huge success. The thing is, the belief in the book did happen but the huge success? No, I did not write ‘the next Bridget Jones’ which was my big plan.
Then there was the job at Metro which led to the book deal. I would pick up Metro on the tube every time I boarded, and read it, thinking ‘I would love to work there’. I always held a belief I could and would work there. I sent emails all the time enquiring about freelance work until, one day, I got a ‘yes’!.
So did I believe it, and it happened? Well, part of me does think that but I took action, too.
There’s a lot of belief and trust right now as I build my coaching business. I met up with a good friend and mentor, Susan Quilliam, this week and we talked about the phrase from Wayne’s World 2: “If you build it, they will come”. Sometimes you have to forge ahead with the hope in your back pocket, wondering if things will work out.
So, can manifesting make your work dreams come true? Some people might say, yes, straight out, yes, that mood board and believing brought results. And some people might say, (like Mr. H) straight out, no. He’s not a manifester!
I believe there’s a middle ground, the perfect mix of action and belief. I often ask clients ‘If I could wave a magic wand and get you the perfect job/career/client', what would that be?’. It’s often hard to answer - it’s a big, open-ended question.
But it gets the thoughts rolling… and it does then require action. You can also be in charge of making the dream happen. That’s the great bit - you don’t just have to sit there and hope, and wonder, and wish. You can say: ‘I believe this can be true for me, so I’m going to give it a shot’.
You can choose to believe and buy the ticket.

Introducing The Career Happiness Reset: Four weeks to find your focus in 2026
I’ve been talking a lot lately about goal setting and here’s the reason why: I’m running a group coaching course in January and yes, you guessed it, it’s all about focusing on you and your goals for 2026.
The Career Happiness Reset is a four-week course, with a mixture of videos and worksheets, group coaching calls and a WhatsApp group chat for everyone during the four weeks of the course.
We’ll dig into your ‘why’ and your values, look at what’s holding you back and in your way, the big dreams and small ones, look at how to turn the goals into actionable steps and make a plan for you to take forward into 2026.
If you’d like to know more, you can of course drop me a line to ask any questions. To book, send an email and then we can get you on the list!
The course is all about finding your focus for 2026. It’s about reconnecting with what you love about your work, or your business, and looking at what’s not working as well as what is - and how to make change happen on your terms and in line with your values.

And then it’s a case of waiting for Jan 5th when the first video and worksheets will land in your inbox.

I absolutely agree with this, Jenny. The dream provides the drive to take action, but without taking that action, the dream is just a dream, not a potential outcome.
